Samsung ML-1865W Laser Jet Printer Review
Samsung ML-1865W

Some home users who do not usually print photographs are moving towards mono laserjet printers. Inkjet printers, if not used for a few weeks or months, can have a tendency to dry up, requiring the heads to be cleaned.

The Samsung ML1865W does not feature a scanner or fax machine and is simply a black and white laser printer with a print resolution of 1200 x 600 dots per inch. The printer occupies a small desktop footprint at just 341mm wide by 224mm deep, and is housed in an attractive gloss and matt plastic case.

Set-up can be easy with the 'one touch' WiFi set-up facility, designed to connect to a wireless network in one operation. A USB cable is also supplied and the printer can also be connected via the USB port. The paper tray can be loaded with 150 sheets of 80gsm A4. The maximum paper thickness allowed is 163gsm.

The control panel is very simple with just a two buttons, on/off and WPS (to set-up wireless connection). Above these are LED indicators for these two buttons. All other functions are controlled by a PC or Mac.

Print speeds are healthy for this sub £100 laserjet ranging from 10 pages per minute to 15ppm for a longer print run. The start/warm up procedure and first page print is very quick for a laser printer. Print quality is with smooth clear text and accurate grayscale images.

The combined toner/drum cartridge come pre-installed and has an average page life of 1500 sheets. The 'toner save' feature allows you to save up to 30% toner, however the print style and quality changes as a result. Genuine original replacement cartridges cost around £40 and compatible versions are about £25.

For a budget mono laserjet machine the Samsung ML-1865W ticks most of the boxes. Print speeds and quality are good and running costs are OK. Of course you cannot copy or scan, but it is just a dedicated printer after all.
